Abstract

The study investigates the oxidative transformations of select amino acids and their esters by Cerium (IV) in partial aqueous solutions, with a focus on the influences of micelles and metal ions. Cerium (IV) is known for its strong oxidizing potential, and its reactions with amino acids have significant implications in biochemical processes and synthetic chemistry. This research explores how the presence of micelles, acting as microenvironments, alters the kinetics and mechanism of the oxidative reactions. Various micellar systems, such as cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants, were employed to understand their role in modulating reaction rates and product distribution. Additionally, the impact of metal ions, such as copper (II) and manganese (II), was analyzed for their catalytic or inhibitory effects on the oxidation process. The study employed spectro photometric techniques to monitor reaction progress and used kinetic models to quantify the influence of micelles and metal ions. Results demonstrate that micelles significantly enhance reaction rates by providing a hydrophobic environment, while metal ions can either accelerate or retard oxidation depending on their coordination behavior. This comprehensive analysis offers new insights into the mechanistic pathways of Cerium (IV)-mediated oxidation of amino acids and their esters, with potential applications in industrial oxidation processes and biochemical systems.
